The secret behind Burndown’s record breaking new album is revealed, as they invite us to their studio.
Out of the blue band “Burndown” has literally sent the music world into a whole new spin. Their new and 2nd album hit the shops on 1st November and has already sold over 750,000 copies. To follow this success, their tour to follow the album sold out in one of the shortest periods ever.
So what made their latest album just so successful? Fortunately we were invited to the place where it all began by the boys themselves.
Although with the band’s busy schedule, they invited us into the middle of it all for one day, where we would see them in action recording their big and highly anticipated hit, “Lip Therapy”.
We arrived at the “Generates” studios to be greeted by the boys at 7:30am. Accompanying their banterous ways of never-endingly setting up traps and pranks around the studio for each other, they proudly gave us a tour of their instruments used in the recording process that they each were playing, with new equipment not yet used by the band, such as 3 bass drums, and slightly beaten guitars, formed, as told by Fergus by, “substituting a hammer with guitars,” used to give an effect not yet heard before. But the most prominently new feature that caught our eye, and quite possibly one of the big reasons behind the success of the new album, were the vast array of Soundboards and computers, controlled by legendary producer, and musician Ryan Tedder, who had teamed up with Burnout after Oscar unexpectedly bumped into his musical hero and inspiration Ryan Tedder in the streets of Los Angeles. With the band’s energetic and kind vibe, Oscar was easily able to connect with Ryan, and soon the two were talking of collaboration.
We were soon asking the group questions, with Burnout letting us get a better insight into the daily lives of the band.
Although the life of a musician seems all fun and festivals, we were told of the daily lives of the band, and the hastiness within, that fan sometimes seem oblivious to. Recording albums and playing shows keeps the group on their toes. Most days were spent recording early in the mornings, then eating takeaways while on the road to their show, and when possible, trying to spend time with their loved ones, which unfortunately, as said by Kieran, “sometimes becomes more of a challenge than a pleasure”,  adding, “playing shows and seeing the fans is great, but sometimes when you’re feeling down and tired, and just need someone to hold, it just makes you want to give it up, not forever, but for a while, just to get back the time with our girlfriend’s and families that’s been taken away from us.”
A question looming for so long, gone unanswered by the band, is how they generated their skills, and being so in sync while playing. After a little deliberation, Oscar replied simply, “None of us have had lessons, or had band experience before this one,” and put it down to the fact that, “we just love what we do”. And it’s clear that the love is shared between the band, and for sure, to the fans.
Although it’s the end of writing for the album, with the tour to follow, and sold out shows, it seems like just the beginning for this energetic band, and 2012 will most definitely be a year to remember.
